We sped along the pine tree-covered, snow-sludgy dirt roads of Mesonia, passing hills, slopes and knolls of various sizes, as well as small valleys and even gorges that seemed to appear out of nowhere. We’d seen none of this while arriving by air, of course, since we’d been above the clouds most of the time – and when we descended low enough, the densely falling snow and gloom of night shrouded everything in darkness.

We passed a bunch of slower troops on the way, but also knew many had reached the Colossus long before us.

After about an hour of piloting our huge battlemech through the uninviting environment, we began noticing fiery bursts illuminating the blackness ahead. Far away, spread across the sky – and dimmed by the dense snowfall – there were brief lights resembling burning lightning strikes in the distance.

Another minute passed before faint, thunderous sounds began accompanying the orange-red flashes.

Next, our smooth, gliding forward motion became as bumpy as mountainous off-road-driving when acute, heavy tremors in the ground made our mech struggle with its stability.

Frida yelped. Her hand shot out and grasped my right arm, causing my joystick hand to wiggle, which made it even harder for the already unstable machine to remain upright on the slippery surface.

<Warning. Stabilization system currently inefficient. Retracting wheels,> Mechana informed dispassionately from her little screen in the center console.

Our forward momentum choked when the mech’s brakes activated. Screeching howled through the huge machine as it continued sliding two dozen meters – unstable, and with its front leaning too much forward – before it miraculously managed to stop dead in the slushy snow.

I blew air out of my mouth and tried calming the pulse pounding in my throat. I put my hand over Frida’s, who still clung to my arm like a lifeline. “You okay, babe?”

“M-hm,” she whispered, eyes wide open. “I was sure we’d tip over right now.”

“Yeah… I guess we–” I began, but another quake shook the ground with such force that the snow covering the pine trees ahead were thrown off in sprays of white.

A screech reverberated outside as Hiko and Tasha’s mech stopped to the left of ours. It, too, slid along the slushy dirt road. They collided with and obliterated pines blocking their path, before coming to a complete standstill.

“You alive over there?” I said through the team-chat.

<Yes, Mr. Walsh,> Hiko replied, coughing. <Seems we have reached the end of–>

But his sentence never finished, because a nerve-shattering, fear-inducing roar engulfed every other sound in the vicinity – like a hellish doomsday war horn.

When the growl calmed, Mechana informed: <Warning. Large amounts of units and plummeting projectiles approaching. Seek cover.>

The radar embedded in our dashboard updated with hundreds of advancing small, green dots, followed by one single enormous, red-blinking splotch.

Flashes of agony fluttered before my mind’s eye; people screaming, burning, dying. Dread. Anguish. It all washed over me as ripples of chills ran like ice water down my spine.

The dark sky flared up when a burning meteor cut through the falling snow.
